Schilderijen door Studio TitForTat: een natuurlijke uitbreiding
Lately, I’ve been reflecting more often on how Studio TitForTat came to be. It all started with objects I wanted to make speak again animal sculptures, figurative sculptures, masks, vases and wall artObjects with character, a past that I clean, restore, and paint over. But I’ve always painted. On paper, and sometimes on canvas, layering paint, contrasts, and patterns. At some point, it simply felt natural: the paintings belong here just as much.
In this blog, I share what led me to make them a true part of the collection..
Dezelfde hand, dezelfde stijl
Just like with the objects, I build up my paintings layer by layer. With paint, texture, contrasts, and rhythm, until the image feels right. My style remains recognizable: playful and bold, with attention to detail, graphic patterns, a love for texture and structure, and often vibrant colors. The medium may change, but the way of working does not. The paintings arise from the same feeling, the same eye, the same hand.
One of a kind, ook hier
What I create exists only once. That’s true for the sculptures and objects, but also for the paintings. No prints, no reproductions, no repetition, each piece is unique. And that very approach, the idea that every work stands on its own, lies at the heart of Studio TitForTat means to me.
Het past gewoon, in stijl én interieur
The paintings can stand on their own as artworks, but they also work beautifully alongside the painted objects: next to a hand-painted candle holder, a wall piece, or a sculpture. Sometimes they clash, sometimes they flow seamlessly together but they always complement each other. Style, color, texture: they connect, without ever becoming predictable.
Soon, I’ll share a separate blog with ideas on how to combine the paintings with other Studio TitForTat pieces in your home.
Duurzaam denken op een andere manier
There are plenty of ways to extend the idea of sustainability into the paintings as well. Using reclaimed wooden frames is one of them. A detail that adds another layer of meaning to the work. But I’m also exploring other possibilities, like painting on canvas or paper that once served another purpose. Just as with the objects, it starts from what already exists. These ideas are still taking shape, but the direction feels familiar.
